Karen Walker skirt – buy of the day

The Kowhai Tree opportunity shop (charity shop) which supports Women’s Refuge is a must-visit store in the old Silverdale shopping centre – Hospice also has a store nearby,

When I visited the shop at the beginning of April, it was packed with good quality clothes and shoes. The staff obviously makes sure worn items don’t end up on the racks, and it’s very reasonably priced.

My buy of the day was a Karen Walker skirt for $1 off the bargain rack outside the front door.

I also bought an early 1990s magazine-styled, buckle hard cased clutch for $3.

Never been a better time to Op shop

Every charity/thrift shop I have been into lately is overflowing with stuff. I admit most of it is junk and should never have been dumped at the shop in the first place but there are plenty of great bargains to be found especially at the Warkworth Methodist Op shop and Homebuilders op shop both opposite the fire station in Warkworth. However, these shops are only open during mornings from 9am to 1pm weekdays. Be warned: you will have to rummage so it’s not for the faint hearted but worth it when you find a vintage Oroton handbag at the bottom of a box of what appears to be run-down handbags. Or a new dress with the tags still attached.

Op Shop Buy of the day: Ekenas vase made in Sweden

Amazingly this beautiful glass vase has no chips or cracks. It was probably made mid-century. I paid $2 for it so it was an awesome buy. Love it!

Marutomoware made in Japan

My op shop buy of the day is this cute bowl with lid made in Japan during the 1920s to 1930s. I have never seen this style of china before so it was an interesting find. I knew it was old because of all the crazy cracking inside the bowl.

Salvation Army Family Store – Tauranga

Down in the Brookfield shopping centre beside the supermarket, this large op shop is clean and well organised. Clothes were $3 each. Lots of kitchen stuff – plates, cups, knives, forks etc. Unusual find was a doll’s chair made from a used drink can. These were a popular craft item in the 1980s.
